The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced January 16, 2027, as the new date for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
The commission also fixed February 6, 2027, for the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
The new timetable was disclosed on Thursday by Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in an official statement.
TAT News had reported that INEC had scheduled the presidential and National Assembly polls for February 20, 2027, and the governorship and state assembly elections for March 6, 2027.
However, a number of individuals, including former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, called for a change of date because of Ramadan.
The repeal of Electoral Act, 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, may also have necessitated adjustments to the electoral calendar.
