The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has reiterated that it is not part of the coalition operating on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), disputing claims by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to the contrary.
In a statement on Thursday, the party’s National Secretary, Mr. Ogini Olaposi, said the NNPP remains independent and has no arrangement to join or merge with the ADC.
Olaposi was reacting to comments made by Atiku during a live interview on Arise Television, where he reportedly listed the NNPP among parties aligned with the ADC coalition.
Describing the claim as incorrect, Olaposi said the party was taken aback by Atiku’s remarks.
“It is surprising that such a statement could be made, suggesting that NNPP is now part of ADC. This is not true,” he said.
He clarified that the involvement of Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, Dr. Ahmed Ajuji, Elder Buba Galadima and members of the Kwankwasiya Movement in the ADC was a personal or group decision that does not reflect the position of the NNPP.
According to him, the party’s formal relationship with the Kwankwasiya Movement ended after the 2023 general elections, when their Memorandum of Association expired.
Olaposi added that Kwankwaso and some of his associates were subsequently expelled from the NNPP, stressing that their political choices no longer have any bearing on the party.
He also maintained that only a minority of the Kwankwasiya Movement followed Kwankwaso into the ADC, while a significant number have since aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While noting that the NNPP has no dispute with the ADC, Olaposi emphasised that the party is focused on pursuing its own political objectives and contesting elections independently.
