Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in the August 15 Osun State governorship election as a remarkable achievement in the face of strong political opposition.
Davido, who spoke with journalists at his country home on Tuesday, congratulated his uncle on securing a second term and praised Osun voters for what he described as their steadfast support during the election.
The singer said the election was a difficult contest, claiming that the governor faced opposition from several influential political figures.
“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” he said.
Davido said the governor’s victory was largely due to the support of the people, whom he commended for standing by Adeleke and protecting their votes.
He said the strength of the support for the Adeleke family during the election was overwhelming, adding that he was moved to tears on several occasions.
“I can’t remember how many times I cried that day because the love was massive,” he said.
The singer said the election had also demonstrated the importance of good governance, urging political leaders to prioritise the welfare of the people.
“My uncle should be an example to all other people out there. It shows all other governors out there that if you work for the people, the people will be with you and God,” he said.
Davido also expressed appreciation to Osun residents for supporting Governor Adeleke despite what he described as attempts to intimidate voters and induce them with money during the election.
Turning to his plans beyond politics, the singer disclosed that he intends to intensify his contribution to youth and sports development in the state.
Davido, who is chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, said he had postponed some planned initiatives until after the election.
“As chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, I want to do a lot of things but waited for the election to be over,” he said.
Among the projects under consideration, he said, is a recreation centre that would provide football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts for young people.
According to him, the facility would create an avenue for young residents to discover and develop their sporting abilities while providing a safe environment for recreation.
Davido had played a prominent role in Adeleke’s re-election campaign, using his considerable social media following to mobilise support for the governor and encourage voters to protect their ballots.
Adeleke was declared winner of the election after defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
With the election over, Davido said his attention would now shift towards supporting initiatives that could expand opportunities for young people in Osun State, particularly in sports and recreation.
