The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis deepened on Sunday as the faction aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, unveiled plans to hold fresh state congresses and a national convention to elect party officials at both state and national levels.

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, chairman of the factional Board of Trustees (BoT), made the announcement during the opening session of the BoT meeting at Wike’s official residence in Life Camp, Abuja.

Restructuring and caretaker committees

Ohuabunwa said the faction was already working to reorganise PDP structures in states affected by internal disputes, including establishing caretaker committees to pave the way for transparent elections and the forthcoming national convention.

“These efforts are aimed at rebuilding trust, strengthening internal structures, and ensuring the party remains a model of fairness and inclusiveness in Nigeria’s democratic space,” he said.

Support for factional NWC

The BoT chairman reaffirmed support for the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Wike faction, stressing the importance of adherence to the law and party guidelines.

“We will work with this NWC, encourage them, and ensure that the right processes are followed in line with the PDP constitution,” Ohuabunwa said.

He added that the BoT has a constitutional and moral responsibility to act as a stabilising force, safeguard the party’s integrity, and steer it away from divisive tendencies.

Unity ahead of elections

Ohuabunwa called on BoT members to remain steadfast in consolidating ongoing reforms, maintaining internal cohesion, and preparing the PDP for future political contests.

“Our duty is to ensure that the PDP emerges stronger, more united, and fully prepared for leadership responsibilities. This is the moment to stand up and be counted,” he said.

Factional tension with Makinde bloc

The Wike faction’s planned convention intensifies a growing rift with the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde-aligned bloc, which in November conducted a national convention in Ibadan, producing Turaki Taminu as national chairman.

The Ibadan convention was marred by conflicting court orders, both permitting and restraining the exercise. The Wike faction has since approached the courts, seeking to nullify the Ibadan convention.

Ohuabunwa himself was appointed factional BoT chairman on 7 November 2025, with Ibrahim Dansidi named secretary, following a meeting at Wike’s residence.
