PDP Falling Apart — I May Leave Soon, Says Ex-Governor Suswam

Former Benue State Governor and ex-senator, Gabriel Suswam, has hinted he may soon part ways with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing deepening internal turmoil and unresolved leadership disputes.

Suswam, who served two terms as governor under the PDP and later as senator, voiced his frustration during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

“There’s a possibility that I will [leave the PDP],” he said bluntly when asked about his future with the party. “I’m tired of the crisis. It’s been lingering for too long.”

His remarks come amid renewed tensions in the PDP following the controversial reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary — a move opposed by many within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, is at the centre of the storm after allegedly unilaterally facilitating Anyanwu’s return. The NWC, in a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, accused Damagum of undermining the party’s constitution and sowing further division.

The incident has further exposed the cracks in the PDP, a party already grappling with internal rifts and declining cohesion.

Suswam said his potential departure was not without direction, noting that he was open to exploring other political platforms such as the Labour Party (LP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), or even the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“There are many alternatives,” he said. “Labour Party is there, NNPP is there. Kwankwaso is a friend and a colleague. Even APC can be an alternative.”

His comments signal a growing wave of discontent among senior PDP figures, many of whom are reportedly considering their future in the party as the 2027 elections approach.

Suswam’s potential defection would mark another significant blow to the PDP’s fragile unity and add to mounting fears that the party is on the verge of a major collapse unless urgent reforms are implemented.
