United States President Donald Trump has announced that his administration has reached an initial framework with NATO on a future deal involving Greenland and the wider Arctic region following talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump described his meeting with Rutte as “very productive,” saying the discussions laid the foundation for an agreement that would benefit both the United States and all NATO member states.

While he did not disclose specific details of the proposed Greenland and Arctic deal, Trump said the understanding reached had prompted his administration to suspend tariffs that were scheduled to take effect on February 1, a decision expected to ease tensions among allied nations.

The president also said further discussions were ongoing on what he described as the “Golden Dome” in relation to Greenland, adding that more information would be released as negotiations progress.

According to Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and other senior officials will lead the negotiations on behalf of the United States and report directly to him.

Greenland and the Arctic have increasingly become areas of strategic and security importance for NATO allies, amid climate change, emerging shipping routes and intensifying geopolitical competition.
