Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers state, has pledged to make his preferred candidate for the upcoming general election in 2023 public in January.
Wike revealed this at the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers' launching of the tenth flyover.
I shall start asking my constituents who they will vote for in January of the following year. Therefore, all of you who have been waiting in suspense, saying foul things about me, wait, January is already here, he said.
Recall that Wike had previously rejected the chairmanship of Iyorchia Ayu following the PDP primary election, which he lost to Atiku Abubakar.
In order for Wike and the other four PDP governors (collectively known as the "G5") to back Atiku's bid for the presidency in 2023, Wike has requested that Ayu resign so that a southerner can take over as party chairman.
Since he made his position known, Wike has faced a barrage of vitriolic criticism from opponents inside his own party. Many people are unsure of Wike's political stance. Some claimed that Wike's opposition to Atiku is obvious.
Wike, however, declared that he would announce his nominee in January 2023 in response to a roar from Obio-Akpor.
In his own words, "I will not only tell them where to cast their ballots; I will also travel from state to state urging them to support the candidates I have advised. And nothing will happen.
"So stop wasting your time again, January has arrived, all of you humiliating me on television. Avoid wasting time by getting on your platform.
"Time has come to convert those shoes and wristwatches into votes, all those telling Nigerians that you used to have forty shoes and fifty wristwatches, the time has come to convert it to a vote, not to stand on the podium and raise your watch and shoe high.
"Those of you who made campaign in 2015, telling Nigerians if they vote for PDP, they are voting for insurgency, corruption, wait all of us will reply, we will tell Nigerians this thing you said how far what is the system now, is it the same PDP or a new PDP, will reply. Those of you who have never been stable, moving from PDP to... and there back to PDP.
Let me take this opportunity to tell those of you in Abuja who consider yourselves to be our brothers that the election in 2023 will show us in Rivers State who the people are who have the power to vote. Those whose opinions their voters will consider. It is not to tell them who to vote while you are in Abuja. Come home and go to your polling booths and campaign. Stop telling them lies. They say what you know you cannot do.
