The Federal Government has announced plans to sell a 753-unit housing estate recovered from former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, as part of efforts to dispose of assets linked to corruption.

The disclosure was made in a statement released on Tuesday by Salisu Haiba, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

According to the statement, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently handed over the estate—comprising 753 duplexes—to the Ministry. The property was retrieved by the anti-graft agency as part of its asset recovery drive targeting proceeds of crime.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, who received the estate from EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede, praised the commission’s efforts in tracking and recovering looted public assets.

Dangiwa disclosed that a joint inspection of the facility would be carried out by officials of the Ministry and EFCC to evaluate the condition of the buildings and surrounding infrastructure.

“We will conduct integrity and structural assessments to ascertain the safety and livability of the estate,” he said. “A comprehensive technical evaluation will also be carried out to determine the cost of completing critical infrastructure such as perimeter fencing, roads, drainage, police post, commercial areas, and recreational centres.”

He added that the housing units would be made available for public purchase as well as allocated for special government programs.

“For the public sale component, we are committed to adopting a fair, transparent, and competitive bidding process,” Dangiwa affirmed.

The move is part of a broader government initiative to put recovered assets to productive use and ensure they serve public interest.
