Alex Otti has launched the rehabilitation of the Ubakala and Ariaria water schemes in Abia State in a project valued at N1.3 billion.
The projects were flagged off on Sunday at Ubakala in Umuahia South Local Government Area as part of activities commemorating the governor’s third year in office.
Speaking at the ceremony, Otti commended Mercy Corps for its partnership and support towards improving water supply in the state.
He explained that the commencement of work at the Ubakala Water Scheme also marked the beginning of the Ariaria Water Scheme project in Aba, adding that both facilities would be completed and inaugurated together.
The governor stressed the importance of potable water to public health and human survival, noting that many health complications and deaths recorded over the years were linked to unsafe water sources.
According to him, his administration remains committed to expanding access to clean water as part of its infrastructure renewal programme across the state.
Otti further disclosed that work on the Aba Regional Water Project had reached 95 per cent completion.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, said the projects formed part of the Abia Integrated WASH Accelerated Programme initiated by the state government.
He revealed that earlier attempts to commence the projects were delayed due to security concerns, including the abduction of financiers travelling through Anambra State.
According to the commissioner, the initiative was originally funded by the United States Agency for International Development through Mercy Corps before a private financier later stepped in to support the projects.
Also speaking, Rabiu Sani said Mercy Corps operates in over 40 countries and has continued to support humanitarian and development programmes across Nigeria.
He explained that the rehabilitation work would involve the restoration of boreholes, testing and repair of pumps and other interventions aimed at ensuring sustainable water supply for residents.
The projects are part of the Abia State Government’s broader efforts to strengthen public utilities and improve access to safe drinking water in communities across the state.
