Abia State governor, Dr Alex Otti, says his administration is open to collaborating with China Harbour Engineering Company Limited on strategic infrastructure projects that will drive economic growth in the state.
Otti disclosed this when he hosted the company’s managing director, Mr Jason Wang, and his team at Government House, Umuahia. He said Abia is seeking technical and investment partnerships in key areas such as erosion control, rail development, dredging and seaport infrastructure.
The governor pointed to the Azumiri Seaport, where feasibility work is currently being finalised, as well as the proposed Abia railway network, as priority projects that hold significant potential for trade expansion and industrial development.
He also revealed that the Akwa Ibom State government has shown interest in collaborating on a rail corridor to link the two states.
“Akwa Ibom has expressed willingness to connect with Abia by rail, in recognition of our existing trade and cultural ties,” Otti said. “We already have preliminary designs, but these can be reviewed or upgraded. What is important is for both parties to examine implementation and funding options together.”
Otti equally invited the company to take part in the Abia Industrial and Innovation Park (AIIP) project in Owaza, Ukwa West, and in efforts to revive dormant industrial assets in the state.
“We are open to partnerships built on transparency and shared value,” he said. “Our goal is to improve the living standards of our people, and we believe this aligns with your profile as a government-owned company with experience across Africa.”
Speaking earlier, Wang said the firm’s visit was to deepen discussions on investment opportunities and infrastructure delivery. He listed the company’s specialties to include roads, bridges, flyovers, rail systems, dredging, seaports and land reclamation.
He commended the infrastructural improvements recorded in Abia under Otti’s administration, adding that the company is encouraged by the state’s development trajectory.
China Harbour is currently involved in several major national projects, including the Lekki Deep Sea Port and the Abuja–Keffi expressway expansion.
Those present at the meeting included the commissioner for industry and SMEs, Mazi Mike Akpara; commissioner for petroleum and solid minerals development; commissioner for environment, Prof Joel Ogbonna; and commissioner for science and technology, Mr Philemon Ogbonna.
