The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has signed on as a Diamond Partner for African Energy Week (AEW) 2025, strengthening its position as a key financier of Africa’s energy transition and development drive.
The event, scheduled for Cape Town in October, will run under the theme Invest in African Energies and aims to attract capital for oil, gas, and renewable projects to eliminate energy poverty by 2030.
Afreximbank’s support comes as the bank accelerates financing of large-scale infrastructure and energy projects across the continent. Recent transactions underscore its role in bridging Africa’s energy investment gap:
A $300 million facility with NBS Bank Malawi to de-risk investments in energy, transport, and logistics;
A Heads of Terms agreement with Green Hybrid Power Private Ltd for a 1GW hybrid solar power project in Zimbabwe;
A $4 million financing package for Proton Energy to advance the 500MW Sapele Gas Power Plant in Nigeria.
The bank also contributed $1.35 billion as part of a $4 billion syndicated facility for the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria, Africa’s largest crude oil processing plant, and is mandated to raise capital for the $4.5 billion EG-27 LNG project in Equatorial Guinea.
To address the estimated $31-50 billion annual energy financing shortfall, Afreximbank is spearheading the establishment of the Africa Energy Bank (AEB), headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria. The AEB will have an initial capital base of $5 billion, with countries such as Angola, Ghana, and Nigeria already meeting funding requirements.
NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, hailed the bank’s involvement: “Afreximbank’s innovative financing structures continue to unlock energy projects across the continent, from upstream oil and gas to renewable power. Their partnership with AEW 2025 will catalyse more deals to drive energy security and industrialisation.”
AEW 2025 will convene global investors, policymakers, and energy leaders for high-level discussions and deal signings aimed at accelerating Africa’s energy transformation.
