The Federal Government has announced plans to sell a massive estate of 753 housing units, allegedly owned by former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, to low and middle-income Nigerians.

The estate, covering over 150,000 square metres, was recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in December 2024 following a final forfeiture order by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the FCT High Court.

Described by the EFCC as the agency’s largest single asset recovery since its inception, the estate comprises duplexes and other residential units. Court filings linked the property to Emefiele, who later challenged the forfeiture but had his application dismissed.

On May 20, 2025, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede officially handed over the estate to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa.

According to the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Badamasi Haiba, the houses are still under construction. He said structural assessments will be conducted before the homes are made available for sale through the ministry’s web portal.

“Our plan aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes homeownership for all categories of Nigerians,” Haiba said.

He assured that flexible payment options, including mortgage, instalments, and rent-to-own, would be available.

Haiba added that the sales process would be transparent and inclusive, using the ministry’s portal renewedhopehomes.fmhud.gov.ng, which eliminates human interference.

“The ministry has already completed a web portal that allows Nigerians to select their preferred house type, location, and payment plan, and immediately receive an offer letter,” he explained.

He dismissed concerns that the estate would be secretly allocated to powerful individuals, noting that the administration is committed to transparency and accountability.

The estate is one of over 10,000 housing units nearing completion under the Renewed Hope Housing Programme.
