The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied reports alleging that the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, is being investigated over an alleged visa fraud scheme.
The anti-corruption agency said on Tuesday that although it is investigating visa racketeering involving some personnel of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the probe does not involve the Immigration Comptroller-General.
In a statement issued by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the Commission described media reports linking Nandap to the investigation as inaccurate.
"The Commission wishes to state unequivocally that it has no case with the Immigration CG," the EFCC said.
The agency confirmed that some immigration officers are already facing trial over the alleged visa fraud.
"There are subsisting cases of alleged visa fraud against some immigration officers at the Federal High Court," the statement noted.
The EFCC disclosed that investigations into the alleged fraud remain ongoing and could result in additional prosecutions.
"Further investigations are ongoing with the possibility that more NIS officers could be arraigned for alleged fraudulent practices in the near future," the Commission stated.
While reaffirming its commitment to prosecuting those found culpable, the anti-graft agency stressed that the current investigation should not be interpreted as involving the head of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
It also cautioned media organisations against publishing unverified reports about its activities, urging journalists to seek official clarification before going to press.
"The media is enjoined to always seek clarifications on the activities of the EFCC to avoid misrepresentation of facts," the statement added.
The clarification comes amid heightened public interest in the Commission's investigation into alleged irregularities in Nigeria's visa processing system.
