The Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board (FGSHLB) has begun compiling a list of retired civil servants who failed to repay housing loans obtained during their service years.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the Board’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Ngozi Obiechina.
Obiechina quoted the Executive Secretary of the Board, Mrs. Salamatu Ahmed, who said the move is aimed at recovering mortgaged properties from retirees who have defaulted on their loan agreements.
The action follows a recent circular from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, signed by the Permanent Secretary, Career Management Office, Mrs. Patience Oyekunle. The memo reiterated that obtaining a Certificate of Non-Indebtedness from the FGSHLB and relevant MDA Cooperative Societies is a mandatory condition for retirement.
According to Ahmed, the Board is prepared to take legal steps to repossess properties from retirees who have not fulfilled their loan obligations.
“This move is in line with Public Service Rules 021002 (p), which mandates public servants to obtain a Certificate of Non-Indebtedness before retirement,” she stated.
She further clarified that the FGSHLB has the legal right to reclaim any mortgaged property if a civil servant exits the service with outstanding debts.
“The Board will not hesitate to enforce loan agreements through appropriate legal channels,” Ahmed warned.
She emphasized that the directive also applies to retired personnel who are already out of service but still owe balances on their housing loans.
Affected retirees have been urged to regularise their loan status and secure the necessary clearance certificates without further delay.
“The list of defaulting retirees is currently being compiled and will be submitted to the relevant regulatory bodies to facilitate debt recovery,” Ahmed concluded.
