Dangote strengthens green transition with expanded CNG fleet

Dangote Cement Plc has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability and low-carbon industrial growth with plans to acquire 1,500 additional compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve transport efficiency across its African operations.

The company said the investment underscores its drive to integrate sustainable practices into its business while reducing reliance on conventional diesel-powered vehicles.

Operating in 10 African countries, Dangote Cement said sustainability remains central to its long-term strategy, with initiatives spanning cleaner energy adoption, efficient resource utilisation, climate action, responsible corporate governance and community development.

The cement producer also announced that its environmental stewardship had received international recognition after securing an upgraded "B" rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for its climate and water management performance.

According to the company, continued investments in energy optimisation have enabled it to improve operational efficiency, lower production costs and reduce the carbon intensity of its manufacturing activities.

Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Cement, Arvind Pathak, said sustainability has become a core element of the company's growth model as it expands its footprint across the continent.

"At Dangote Cement, sustainability is not a standalone initiative; it is embedded in the way we operate, invest and grow. As we expand our footprint across Africa, we remain committed to reducing our environmental impact through cleaner energy sources, improved operational efficiency and innovative logistics solutions such as our growing CNG-powered fleet," he said.

Pathak stressed that while cement remains indispensable to Africa's infrastructure development, the company recognises its responsibility to manufacture the product in a manner that conserves resources, limits emissions and delivers social and economic benefits to host communities.

He added that the company's sustainability agenda is designed to create enduring value for shareholders while contributing to a more resilient and environmentally sustainable future for Africa.

Dangote Cement said it is also strengthening diversity and corporate governance, with women accounting for 28 per cent of its Board membership and directors representing seven nationalities.

The company noted that its sustainability framework is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of climate action, responsible industrialisation, economic growth and community impact.

It maintained that its environmental, social and governance initiatives complement a resilient business model that continues to deliver value to shareholders, employees, customers, host communities and governments across Africa.

Dangote Cement said it remains committed to driving industrial development on the continent while pursuing its ambition of becoming one of the world's leading sustainable cement manufacturers.
