Dr. Betta Edu, minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, has disowned a website purporting to be a federal government trust fund portal.

The website has been harvesting data of unsuspecting Nigerians.

In a statement on Tuesday, Rasheed Olanrewaju, spokesperson of the minister, quoted Edu as saying the website was not created by the ministry or any other federal agency.

“The honourable minister for humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, wishes to inform the general public that a circulating portal ‘FG Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund Portal’ did not emanate from the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation,” the statement reads.

“The said portal is fake, created by undesirable elements with the sole intention of defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.”

In September, the federal government established a poverty alleviation trust fund for citizens.

The minister said 30 percent of the funding is expected to come from the federal government while the balance of 70 percent should come from donor agencies.
