Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest airline, has alleged that a prominent Nigerian senator disrupted its operations at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 1 on Wednesday after missing a scheduled flight.
The airline issued a statement following the emergence of a viral video showing former Edo State Governor and current senator, Adams Oshiomhole, locking the terminal gate and confronting airport officials after he was reportedly denied boarding.
Although Air Peace did not directly name the politician, the airline confirmed that the individual arrived at the airport at about 6:10 a.m. for Flight P47120 to Abuja, which was scheduled to depart at 6:30 a.m. Boarding, the airline said, had already closed in line with its on-time departure policy.
“Upon being informed of the missed flight, the politician resorted to violence,” Air Peace said. “He physically assaulted our staff and went on to barricade the terminal entrance, locking the gate and obstructing access for other passengers.”
The airline said the incident caused serious disruption to flight operations and affected several passengers. To manage the situation, it activated an emergency contingency plan and rerouted passengers through an alternative terminal to ensure their travel plans were not entirely derailed.
Air Peace described the senator’s actions as unacceptable, emphasizing that no individual, regardless of status, is above operational rules and safety protocols.
“We are disappointed that a figure of such prominence would display such unruly conduct, especially within a sensitive environment like an airport,” the airline stated. “We urge all passengers to uphold civility and respect while engaging with our staff and operations.”
The airline reiterated its commitment to discipline, integrity, and the safety of its passengers and crew.
