President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new welfare policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this on Thursday at the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he presented the ministry’s achievements and outlined plans to strengthen institutional capacity across all its agencies.
According to a statement signed by DCF PO Abraham, NPRO and Head of Corporate Services at the Federal Fire Service, the policy reflects the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of security and paramilitary personnel.
“In recognition of the welfare of senior officers, the minister announced that any officer retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General will now receive lifetime salary benefits, a policy graciously approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.
Tunji-Ojo expressed deep appreciation to the President for his support, noting that all agencies under the ministry are benefitting from the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He revealed that the ministry had cleared a backlog of promotions, with over 50,000 officers elevated within the last two years. Moving forward, he said promotions will be based on a system anchored on capacity and performance.
The minister also disclosed ongoing initiatives aimed at institutional development, including the creation of new training manuals and the construction of a world-class Fire Academy designed to rival leading international institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy.
He further stressed the importance of mental health for officers and pledged continued support in that regard.
Additionally, Tunji-Ojo urged the Federal Fire Service to pursue partnerships with the private sector to improve infrastructure, modernise firefighting operations, and enhance service delivery across the country.
