The Abia State government has announced plans to launch a comprehensive Industrial Policy to enhance the ease of doing business, attract investment, and drive the execution of its 2025–2050 development plan. A dedicated committee has been set up to steer the initiative.

Prince Okey Kanu, Commissioner for Information, disclosed this on Tuesday at Government House, Umuahia, while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting.

Kanu explained that the policy is a response to the state’s ongoing transformation and institutional reforms over the past 31 months.

“Abia State believes the time has come to establish an industrial policy that will drive industrial growth across the state,” he said. “Through our Ease of Doing Business Agency, we have already made significant strides in creating a more investor-friendly environment.”

He added that the new policy, combined with a conducive business climate, will not only attract investors but also strengthen the state’s competitive advantages in resource utilisation and management.

Highlighting the state’s urban renewal efforts, Kanu said the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), and Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA) will implement projects aligned with the state’s long-term development plan.

“These initiatives will address key infrastructure gaps, including street naming, house numbering, and geo-referencing, which are critical for planning, security, logistics, and digital services,” he said.

Kanu emphasised the importance of standardised addresses in creating order and facilitating investment. “The state government will soon appoint a project manager to oversee this important programme,” he added.

On infrastructure development, the Ministry of Works has undertaken direct labour projects in 49 locations. Of these, three have been completed, one new project has been added, and 31 projects remain ongoing across the state.

Meanwhile, the state’s pilot electric bus mass transit service continues to perform well. Kanu revealed that 77,774 residents have benefited from free rides since the service was launched in December 2025.

“The electric bus initiative remains a key part of our commitment to providing efficient, accessible, and sustainable public transport for Abians,” he said.
