Ardent football fans in Nigeria have been jolted by the disclosure that Multichoice will not be covering the AFCON matches live via it's channels, DStv and Gotv, are currently in disarray.

Although a release from the company stated that their partners, the Free to Air platform, will beam the matches live, many people are indifferent to it to avoid unbudgeted expenses.

Even if the transmission right has been given to rival station, Startimes, as some are speculating, it suggests that those, who don't have the decoder should go for same.

'This is January and everybody is just emerging from the Christmas and New Year expenses. I personally don't have plans to embark on any expenses now. I'm routing for the viewing centers," a football journalist said.

Another football fan put it this way: "where is even the electricity supply to watch it at home. I think the Viewing Center is the best option. This is not time for unnecessary expenses."

For those who have Startimes decoders already, they may not spend much to hook on to the matches.

"If Startimes will show the matches, I may dust my decoder, recharge and settle for same. Otherwise going outside for same will suffice. Where's even the light'" he queried.

Sports entertainment has been eluding diehard fans due to erratic power supply and increase in cost of TV viewing portals.

The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament begins in Ivory Coast on January 13.
