The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has approved the transfer of ownership of the moribund Star Paper Mill in Aba to the Abia State government, as part of efforts to revive dormant industries and boost economic activities in the state.
The development aligns with the state government’s policy of resuscitating non-functional companies and handing them over to credible investors for sustainable management. Other firms earmarked for similar revitalisation include Afro Beverages, Aba Textile Mills, International Equitable Association, and Ken Biscuits.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing at Government House, Umuahia, after this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu explained that the state’s intervention aims to create jobs and increase internally generated revenue.
“The state government’s stake in the company, when fully operational, will be minimal, but significant enough to enable us monitor its activities and protect the interests of the state and Abians,” he said.
In a related development, Kanu announced that the Ministry of Environment commenced house-to-house sanitary inspections across the 17 local government areas on August 1 under the Keeping Abia State Clean Initiative. He warned that defaulters will be prosecuted in line with the state’s environmental laws.
The commissioner also revealed that the grand finale of the 2025 August Meeting, organised by the Office of the Governor’s wife, will hold on Tuesday, August 26, at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.
Speaking on preparations, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Maureen Aghukwa, described the August Meeting as “a grassroots parliament for women,” commending Lady Priscilla Otti for her leadership in mobilising women and championing empowerment initiatives.
“We are going to have competitions and gift presentations. Her Excellency, who has been driving this vision, will also roll out more empowerment programmes for women and youths,” Aghukwa added.
