President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will this Saturday, May 31, formally inaugurate Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a flagship project of his administration, as part of activities lined up for his working visit to Lagos.
The coastal highway, which has generated both praise and controversy since its announcement, is envisioned as a transformative 700-kilometre superhighway stretching from Lagos through key coastal cities in nine states to Calabar in Cross River State. The project, once completed, is expected to enhance trade, tourism, and connectivity across Nigeria’s South-South and South-West regions.
According to a statement issued Monday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President will flag off Section I of the project, which spans Lagos to Lekki Deep Sea Port, covering approximately 47 kilometers.
This section is being constructed with a concrete pavement under the Executive Order 007 (Tax Credit Scheme), in partnership with Hitech Construction Company Limited. It includes multiple interchanges, bridges, and culverts, and is designed to meet international standards for coastal highways.
President Tinubu will also flag off Section II of the same highway, extending from Lekki Deep Sea Port to the border of Ogun State, marking the beginning of sustained construction through the South-South corridor.
Additionally, Tinubu is scheduled to inaugurate the Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road, another critical link constructed under the tax credit infrastructure scheme, designed to facilitate cargo movement and improve logistics efficiency within the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
Another highlight of the visit will be the launch of the 7th Axial Road, part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing urban renewal and decongestion efforts in the Lekki-Epe corridor.
Beyond Lagos, the President will also conduct virtual inaugurations of several strategic federal roads in northern Nigeria. These include:
Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road
Yakasai-Zalli Road
Kano Northern Bypass
Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I
Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi Road
Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III
These road projects, part of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Infrastructure Plan, aim to boost economic activities, improve access to remote communities, and ease intra-state movement in key northern states.
While in Lagos, President Tinubu will also participate in events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which he currently chairs. The ECOWAS Golden Jubilee celebrations, which began in Accra, Ghana in April, will continue in Lagos with a high-profile event at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island.
One of the highlights of the celebration will be a reenactment of the 1975 Lagos Treaty Declaration, a symbolic moment marking ECOWAS’s founding. Tinubu will be joined by General Yakubu Gowon (rtd.), the only surviving Head of State who signed the treaty and who is expected to deliver a commemorative speech.
Also expected at the event are:
Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, who will deliver the welcome address
Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, former Minister of External Affairs, who will lead a review of ECOWAS’s 50-year journey
A panel of scholars and regional experts who will provide critical reflections on ECOWAS’s achievements, challenges, and future
After the celebrations, President Tinubu is expected to observe Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House Mosque, Dodan Barracks, before returning to Abuja.
The Presidency has described the Lagos visit as “a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to infrastructure renewal, regional integration, and economic growth,” adding that more projects would be rolled out across the country in the coming months.
