Abia Govt Partners Israeli Agric Investors to Boost Food Production

The Abia State Government has announced plans to partner with Israeli agricultural investors to enhance food production and accelerate economic growth in the state.

Governor Alex Otti made this known while receiving a delegation led by Mr. Kidron Israel, Managing Director of ONIDA Development, an Israeli-based agricultural investment company. The meeting, held at the Government House in Umuahia, focused on collaborative efforts in fish farming, poultry, and vegetable production.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, Governor Otti expressed optimism about the partnership and pledged the state’s commitment to supporting the project.

“After listening to your presentation, I am convinced we will work together,” Governor Otti said. “We are ready to provide land for the project, and that land can serve as our equity in the investment. Even if there are any costs, they will be minimal because we are directly involved.”

He directed the Israeli delegation to immediately engage with the state’s technical team to finalize implementation strategies and ensure swift commencement of the project. The governor identified vegetable farming and fish production as ideal entry points, with room for expansion into other agricultural sectors over time.

Governor Otti also praised the entrepreneurial spirit of Abia people, noting that they do not rely on government handouts but rather need a conducive environment to thrive. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating a business-friendly climate across the state.

“Abia is open for business. We welcome anyone with something valuable to offer. Our government supports businesses because we are a business-oriented people,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Mr. Kidron Israel said the investors were drawn to Abia by the governor’s progressive approach to governance and partnership. He assured that his team already had access to financing and only required land and government support to begin operations.

Also speaking, Mrs. Florence Osuji, National Coordinator of the Nigeria-Israel Forum, said the team was in Abia to introduce Israeli agricultural technology and expertise as part of broader efforts to enhance food security. She identified key areas of interest to include fish production, poultry, and vegetable cultivation.
