Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has positioned the state as a model for subnational climate action at the recently concluded COP30 in São Paulo, Brazil, highlighting its integrated approach to combating climate change and promoting sustainable energy.

A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, on Tuesday confirmed that Professor Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, Director-General and Special Envoy on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, represented the governor at the summit. She showcased Osun’s pioneering initiatives in renewable energy, e-mobility, circular economy, and community-based recycling.

At the state’s COP30 side event, titled “From Waste to Wheels and Watts: Subnational Innovation in Recycling, E-Mobility & Solar”, Prof. Obuaku-Igwe emphasized the importance of moving beyond intentions to measurable outcomes, stating that Osun seeks real partnerships, investments, and technical collaborations that directly benefit its citizens.

She outlined three core commitments in the state’s climate strategy: deepening subnational-international partnerships, unlocking climate finance including Article 6 opportunities, and scaling homegrown innovations. She also highlighted achievements such as solar energy adoption, recycling enterprises, and the development of a Green Livelihoods workforce, urging partners to support their expansion for national and global replication.

“Climate leadership must translate into jobs, stronger institutions, and resilience for the people we serve. Osun State is not here simply to attend COP30. We are here to deliver outcomes that follow us home,” she said.

The side event also included a screening of a documentary capturing Osun’s transformation through recycling, e-mobility, and solar innovation, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a leader in pragmatic and scalable climate solutions.

Governor Adeleke’s administration has received multiple local and international awards for its climate policies and projects, reflecting its commitment to sustainable development and innovation.
