The Enugu State Government has announced that several key infrastructure and development projects—including Enugu Air, a CNG-powered mass transit system, and five new transport terminals—will become operational before the administration marks its second anniversary on May 29.

The update came after the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Enugu, where top commissioners gave progress reports on the administration's multi-sector development plans.

Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor, said that Enugu Air will begin operations with three aircraft, two of which have already arrived, while the third is expected before the end of the month. "We aim to launch full commercial operations before the second-year anniversary," he said.

He also revealed that 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses would begin service across the state, with 50 already stationed at Okpara Square and another 50 arriving soon. Additionally, new transport terminals at Holy Ghost (2), Gariki, Abakpa, and Nsukka will also open for public use by May 29.

Beyond transport, Ozor said plans are underway to establish an automotive assembly plant for electric and CNG vehicles in Enugu, alongside the rollout of the Enugu Smart Transport Programme, which will introduce over 2,000 electric vehicles in the next 150 days.

Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, disclosed that the state has approved the phased development of its tourism sector, starting with major projects at Awhum Waterfall, Nsude Pyramid, Ngwo Pine Forest, and the Cross of Hope monument in Okpatu.

She explained that the Nsude Pyramid would host Nigeria’s longest canopy walkway (600 metres), while Ngwo Pine Forest would feature the country’s first zipline (300 metres). The Cross of Hope, a 50-metre tall structure located 580 metres above sea level, will house 15 floors and an elevator, serving as a symbolic and religious attraction.

Other tourism sites, including Akwuke/Atakwu Waterpark and the Ovu Lake Golf and Resort in Akpawfu, will offer renewable energy, food courts, and tour experience centres, with dedicated tour buses arriving soon to ease mobility.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, said full renovation works will begin in June at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Awgu Games Village ahead of the 2026 National Sports Festival, tagged “Coal City Games,” which Enugu will host.

He also announced that a state-of-the-art animation laboratory for youth training is ready for commissioning and that over 2,100 youths trained last December will receive empowerment packages on August 12, International Youth Day.
