Abia to roll out electric mass transit buses by November

The Abia State government has announced plans to introduce electric-powered buses for its mass transit system before the end of 2025. The buses, manufactured in China, have already been fully paid for, while routes and necessary logistics have been finalised to ensure a smooth launch in November.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this during a media chat with journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, following this week’s State Executive Council meeting.

Kanu also revealed that Governor Alex Otti will soon commission rehabilitated water schemes in Aba and Umuahia under the Integrated Wash Accelerator Programme (IWAP). The project, located at the newly constructed Wash Facility at Okigwe Park, Umuahia, is aimed at restoring sustainable water supply, sanitation, and hygiene services across the state.

“In line with the Governor’s directive to ensure potable water for residents, the state government engaged Vena Cava Limited to revamp the Aba water scheme under the first phase of IWAP,” Kanu said.
“The facility is designed to provide safe and sustainable water services for both current and future needs, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 and the zero-defecation agenda in Abia.”

According to him, the project will include the construction and maintenance of modern solar-powered water facilities to ensure reliability.

Solar energy for health facilities

The Commissioner further stated that Governor Otti will also inaugurate a 150 kV solar power project with 430 kW battery storage, aimed at powering health facilities across the state. This, he noted, would reduce reliance on the national grid, cut diesel costs, and promote sustainability.

Creative talent programme and UNESCO bid

Kanu announced that the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy will, on July 25, 2025, launch a statewide Creative Talent Programme across all 17 local government areas. The initiative aims to discover and promote young creative talents, fostering youth inclusion and empowerment.

“This programme highlights the government’s commitment to cultural innovation and the global promotion of Abia’s creative potential,” Kanu said.

He added that formal processes have commenced to designate Aba as a UNESCO Creative City, with a team of assessors expected to visit the city this week.

Urban renewal and security

On urban renewal, Kanu noted that ₦4.1 billion was raised through the recently launched Abia State Security Trust Fund. He said beautification projects, including mural painting and the design of public artworks, are underway at locations such as FMC Umuahia, the Osisioma Interchange in Aba, and Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic.

Water projects in Aba

The Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, said efforts are ongoing to revive the three major water schemes in Aba — Ogbor Hill, CKC, and Ariaria.

“The first phase, which focuses on upgrading treatment facilities to produce water that meets World Health Organization standards, will take about six months,” Monday said.
“The second phase will address the reticulation and rehabilitation of distribution and transmission lines within Aba.”

Beautification and monuments

Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Mr. Matthew Ekwuruibe, confirmed that murals and monuments will be erected in strategic locations.

“Aba is home to talent and creativity, and our projects will reflect that identity. Beyond murals, we are committed to boosting the city’s image and aligning with the governor’s vision of cultural and urban renewal,” he said.
