The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a fresh warning to Nigerians, urging them to be cautious of fraudsters posing as representatives of the apex bank and peddling false financial offers.
In a statement published on its official website, the CBN disclaimed any association with individuals or groups circulating fake offers of contracts, loans, grants, or intervention funds purportedly sanctioned by the bank.
“The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn once again to the activities of individuals and groups falsely claiming to represent or act on behalf of the CBN,” the statement read. “These actors continue to circulate fictitious offers of contracts, loans, grants, intervention funds, and other financial benefits allegedly issued or endorsed by the CBN.”
The apex bank noted that despite an earlier advisory issued on November 18, 2024, warning the public against such scams, the fraudulent activities have persisted, preying on unsuspecting Nigerians.
Reiterating its position, the CBN emphasized that it has not authorized or appointed any person or organization to act as an agent or intermediary for the disbursement of contracts or financial support.
The bank also stressed that it does not communicate unsolicited offers through emails, phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp, or social media platforms, nor does it request upfront fees in exchange for financial benefits.
“The Central Bank of Nigeria does not award contracts or disburse funds through unsolicited communications,” the statement added. “It also does not engage intermediaries or third parties to offer financial services or opportunities to the public.”
The CBN advised members of the public to avoid engaging with anyone making such claims and to report such incidents promptly to law enforcement agencies or the nearest CBN branch.
The bank reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the financial interests of Nigerians and stated it would continue working with security agencies to combat fraud and hold perpetrators accountable.
