China accuses Nvidia of antitrust violations

China has accused US chip giant Nvidia of breaching anti-monopoly rules, in a move that deepens tensions with Washington even as both sides hold fresh trade talks.

The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) said Monday its preliminary probe found Nvidia had violated conditions tied to its $6.9bn purchase of Israeli chipmaker Mellanox in 2020. It gave no details but confirmed a full investigation will follow.

The announcement came as US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent led a fourth round of trade negotiations with Chinese officials in Madrid, which he described as “progressing well.”

The US last week blacklisted two Chinese semiconductor firms from buying American equipment and continues to restrict sales of Nvidia’s advanced AI chips, citing national security concerns.

Nvidia shares fell 1.4% in pre-market trading after Beijing’s announcement, reflecting investor unease over rising trade friction between the world’s two largest economies.
