President Bola Tinubu has announced key leadership changes in Nigeria’s energy sector, appointing Professor Shu’aib Aliyu as Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and renewing the tenure of Sule Abdulaziz as Managing Director and CEO of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for a second and final term. Both appointments take effect immediately.
Aliyu replaces Ahmed Aminu, who stepped down from the PTDF to pursue the 2027 governorship race in Adamawa State. The Presidency described the new appointee as a distinguished academic and administrator with a wealth of experience in research, institutional management, and human capital development.
According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Aliyu’s appointment reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening strategic institutions within Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
“Professor Aliyu is expected to reposition the PTDF to achieve greater impact in innovation, capacity building, and strategic support for the nation’s oil and gas industry, in alignment with national priorities,” the statement said.
On the renewal of Abdulaziz’s tenure at TCN, the Presidency highlighted the Managing Director’s record in improving the national electricity transmission network. Under his leadership, the company has enhanced grid stability, expanded transmission capacity, and modernised system operations.
Abdulaziz has also been credited with advancing regional electricity integration through the West African Power Pool, a move seen as crucial for strengthening energy cooperation across the region.
Tinubu urged both Aliyu and Abdulaziz to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, diligence, and integrity in carrying out their duties, in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
