The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has taken delivery of over 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks as part of preparations to kick off nationwide fuel distribution starting August 15, 2025.
The trucks are part of a larger 4,000-vehicle fleet being assembled by the 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery to ensure efficient delivery of petroleum products across the country. According to Vanguard checks, more truck shipments are expected in the coming days to complete the first phase of the logistics rollout.
Despite reservations from some stakeholders, the Dangote Group remains committed to launching the programme as scheduled. The initiative is aimed at improving supply, cutting transportation costs, and ultimately reducing fuel prices for consumers.
The refinery has invested over ₦720 billion in the CNG truck initiative, which is projected to save the country more than ₦1.7 trillion annually in distribution-related expenses. Dangote says it will shoulder approximately ₦1.07 trillion of this cost each year, in a move designed to stabilise the fuel supply chain and make energy more affordable.
From mid-August, the refinery will begin direct delivery of petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel to filling stations, large industrial users, and other major consumers across Nigeria. This eliminates the need for third-party fuel marketers and reduces the cost of transportation, a key factor driving up pump prices.
In addition to easing fuel distribution bottlenecks, the initiative is expected to deliver major benefits to Nigeria’s over 42 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which often bear the brunt of high energy costs. By cutting down their fuel expenses, the Dangote project could significantly boost profitability in the small business sector.
The refinery’s distribution strategy is designed to meet the nation’s daily consumption of 65 million litres of refined products — including 45 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 15 million litres of diesel, and 5 million litres of aviation fuel.
As the countdown to August 15 begins, the Dangote Refinery’s logistics push marks a bold effort to address long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s fuel supply network, promising more stable prices and improved access to petroleum products nationwide.
