SpaceX, owned by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has acquired $17 billion worth of spectrum licenses from U.S. operator EchoStar, as part of efforts to strengthen its Starlink direct-to-cell satellite service, the companies announced Monday.

The deal will allow Boost Mobile users under EchoStar’s network to access Starlink connectivity directly via their mobile phones—eliminating the need for additional hardware or terminals.

SpaceX launched its first direct-to-cell satellites in early 2024. Initially limited to text messaging and alerts, the service has now expanded to include apps, social networks, and messaging platforms, ensuring connectivity in remote and underserved regions.

To achieve this, SpaceX has signed agreements with ten mobile operators in North and South America, Australia, Japan, Switzerland, and Ukraine.

“Over half of the world’s landmass is still beyond the reach of terrestrial mobile services,” SpaceX said on its website. “Our next-generation Direct-to-Cell constellation aims to close that gap by partnering with carriers worldwide to deliver universal coverage.”

EchoStar’s stock soared following the announcement, jumping 22% to $82 in pre-market trading on the New York Stock Exchange around 12:00 GMT.
