The United States government has announced new visa restrictions for Nigerian citizens, limiting most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visa categories to single-entry permits valid for just three months.

In a statement published on the website of the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the U.S. Department of State said the new policy takes immediate effect. However, all visas issued before the date will retain their original validity and terms.

According to the statement, the revised policy is part of a routine review of the U.S. visa reciprocity arrangement, which may result in changes to the number of entries allowed or the duration of stay permitted under U.S. visas.

The U.S. Department of State said the new restrictions are aimed at protecting the integrity of its immigration system by adhering to global security and technical standards. These include ensuring secure travel documents, curbing visa overstays, and facilitating the exchange of security and criminal data to improve public safety.

Officials from the U.S. Mission noted that they are in discussions with Nigerian authorities to support efforts to meet these standards. While acknowledging progress made by Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies, the statement said certain gaps still exist.

The U.S. also advised Nigerian applicants to ensure that their travel documents are valid and authentic, and to comply strictly with visa conditions.

Despite the changes, the U.S. government reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Nigeria through business, educational, and cultural exchanges. It pledged continued cooperation with Nigerian officials to promote safe, secure, and lawful travel between both countries.
