Ebonyi Government Shuts Down 283 Illegal, Substandard Schools

The Ebonyi State Government has sealed a total of 283 illegal and substandard primary and secondary schools across the state in the past two years, as part of efforts to reform and strengthen the education sector.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Paul Nwobasi, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists in Abakaliki on Thursday.

According to Nwobasi, the affected schools were spread across various parts of the state and were found to be operating without approval or failing to meet the basic standards required by the government.

He described the proliferation of such institutions as a major threat to the state’s vision for quality education and issued a stern warning to proprietors of illegal schools to either shut down or engage with the Ministry of Education to regularise their operations.

“The sealing of these schools is part of our broader initiative to ensure that every child in Ebonyi receives quality education in a safe and conducive environment,” he said. “We urge all owners of unapproved private schools to come forward and work with the Ministry for proper guidance on how to meet standards and secure official approval.”

Prof. Nwobasi also highlighted the government’s investment in public education infrastructure, revealing that the state had commenced the construction of 39 new classroom blocks in secondary schools across the 13 Local Government Areas.

He further announced the ongoing construction of 42 model classroom blocks, designed with modern architectural aesthetics, and 36 new buildings for primary schools—two in each LGA.

“These projects are part of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s commitment to improving the learning environment and expanding access to quality education for all children in the state,” the commissioner added.
