Presidency calls Fintri's defection a major blow to Atiku

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move the Presidency says deals a major setback to former vice president Atiku Abubakar.

Fintiri made the announcement during a 14-minute statewide broadcast from his new governor’s office on Friday. He revealed that he was leaving the PDP with his entire cabinet and all party officials in the state, describing the move as being in the “developmental interest” of Adamawa residents.

Immediately following the announcement, PDP flags were taken down in the governor’s office and across the Government House.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, welcomed the defection as a significant political gain for the APC.

“Big blow for Atiku in Adamawa: Fintiri joins APC, making Tinubu’s party a juggernaut in the state,” Onanuga wrote in a post on X. He added that the governor’s move “takes away Abubakar Atiku’s entire home base to President Tinubu’s party.”

Linking the development to the 2027 presidential election, Onanuga said: “With the election less than a year away, Fintiri’s defection is surely a big blow to veteran presidential runner Atiku Abubakar. If a politician is not so popular at home, he has no business selling his candidacy to outsiders. The time is nigh for Atiku to consider retiring from politics and going to his second home in Dubai.”
