Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, but insisted that his decision should not be misconstrued as an admission of guilt in the certificate scandal that trailed his appointment.

The Presidency confirmed his resignation on Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation over his future in government after media reports alleged that he submitted forged academic credentials during his ministerial screening.

In a statement, Nnaji, appointed in August 2023 as part of Tinubu’s inaugural cabinet, said the decision to step down followed “deep reflection and consultations with family, associates, and well-meaning Nigerians.” He described the allegations as “unfounded” and blamed what he called “an orchestrated campaign of falsehood” for his exit.

“These allegations and media distortions have not only caused personal distress but also threatened to distract from the vital work of the ministry and the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President,” Nnaji declared. “My decision to resign is not an admission of guilt, but a principled step to respect due process and protect the integrity of judicial proceedings currently before the court.”

The former minister stressed that his reputation, built over five decades of public and private service, remained anchored on honour and hard work. He pledged continued loyalty to Tinubu’s administration and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve.

Nnaji’s resignation, the first from Tinubu’s cabinet since its inauguration, has further stoked debate on the integrity of public officials and the screening process for top government positions.
