The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr Yunusa Tanko, has debunked media reports suggesting a rift between the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the party's acting national chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman.
Tanko, while addressing journalists on Monday, described the rumour as “entirely baseless,” insisting that Obi remains a committed and loyal member of the Labour Party under Senator Usman’s leadership.
He was responding to claims that Obi’s appearance at the campaign flag-off of Labour Party’s Anambra State governorship candidate, Dr George Moghalu, signalled a fallout with the party leadership.
“His Excellency Peter Obi has consistently affirmed that he remains a member of the Labour Party under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman,” Tanko said. “He has also made it clear that he supports all individuals who legitimately secured the party’s ticket to contest elections.”
He dismissed the notion that Obi had betrayed Usman, describing such suggestions as a false narrative being pushed by opposition figures to cause division.
“Let’s not forget that Mr. Obi is a man of integrity, known for keeping his word,” Tanko said. “His decision to support Dr George Moghalu as the Labour Party’s candidate in Anambra is consistent with his values and commitment to party unity.”
Tanko emphasised that Senator Usman and other key stakeholders in the party were fully aware of recent developments, and stood in support of Obi’s actions.
According to him, “So far, those who have spoken on this matter include senators, House of Representatives members, state lawmakers, and myself. This clearly reflects a departure from the old political order.”
He urged the public to disregard the rumours, which he described as deliberate attempts to create disaffection within the party.
“Our focus remains singular: to build a strong movement, unite the Labour Party, and work towards a better Nigeria,” Tanko concluded.
