The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the Notice of Election and full timetable for the 2027 General Elections, fixing February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly polls and March 6, 2027, for governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, made the announcement on Friday at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, describing the release as both a constitutional obligation and a key step in preparations for the polls.
He said the elections will cover the offices of President and Vice President, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as Governors, Deputy Governors, and State Assembly members, except in states with off-cycle governorship elections.
Prof. Amupitan noted that the Notice was issued in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which requires INEC to give notice at least 360 days before elections.
He warned against the circulation of unofficial timetables and stressed that only INEC has the authority to set election dates. While acknowledging ongoing amendments to the law by the National Assembly, he said the commission would proceed under the current legal framework until any changes are enacted.
The timetable outlines deadlines for party primaries, submission of nomination forms, and the campaign window, which will close 24 hours before Election Day. INEC also listed expanded technology use, voter register updates, collaboration with security agencies, and voter education as priorities.
The chairman urged political parties and citizens to play their roles in ensuring peaceful and credible elections.
