Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has ordered security agencies to arrest those responsible for the attack on the convoy of former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Calabar.
Otu described the incident, which happened on Wednesday during Obi’s campaign visit to the state capital, as disturbing and a violation of the state’s tradition of peaceful coexistence.
The governor’s condemnation was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Linus Obogo, on Thursday.
He expressed sympathy with Obi and members of his entourage, assuring them that his administration would not allow political differences to degenerate into violence or intimidation.
Otu said all political parties and their candidates were entitled to move freely across the state and engage with residents as part of their legitimate political activities.
He noted that the attack contradicted the values for which Cross River was known, particularly its reputation for hospitality, tolerance and mutual respect.
“Cross River has long been cherished as the cradle of hospitality, warmth and civil decorum in Nigeria; our culture is rooted in peace, harmony and mutual respect for all people, regardless of political affiliation,” the governor said.
He maintained that his government would not tolerate attempts by individuals or groups to undermine the peaceful conduct of political activities in the state.
According to him, the administration has a zero-tolerance policy towards political violence and criminal conduct, regardless of those involved.
Otu also assured political stakeholders that Cross River remained open to peaceful campaigns and other lawful democratic engagements.
“I have directed our security agencies to leave no stone unturned, until every single perpetrator of this shameful act is brought to book to face the full weight of the law,” he stated.
The governor urged that the incident be treated with the seriousness it deserved, stressing that those found culpable must be held accountable in accordance with the law.
