Former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has been released on bail after being arrested and questioned by the Nigeria Police Force over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
Okorocha was arrested on Monday night at REIZ Continental Hotel in central Abuja and released after approximately one hour of interrogation, according to the police.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, confirmed the arrest and release to Channels Television, disclosing that the former governor had been asked to return to the Force Headquarters on Tuesday for further questioning.
The police action reportedly followed Okorocha’s failure to honour previous invitations issued in connection with the investigation.
The former governor was initially invited to appear at the Force Headquarters on September 2. However, the appointment was moved to September 8 after his lawyers requested a change of date.
Okorocha reportedly failed to attend the rescheduled meeting, leading to further police action.
His release on bail does not bring the investigation to a close, as the police are expected to continue questioning him over the allegations.
The allegations remain under investigation, and no conclusion on Okorocha’s culpability has been established in the information made available.
