Former Senate President and retired Brigadier General David Mark has expressed deep concern over the unrelenting wave of violent attacks in Benue State, warning that residents may have no choice but to defend themselves if the killings continue unchecked.
In a statement released through his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Mark described the incessant assaults on communities across the state as “tragic and senseless,” stressing that the situation had crossed every line of tolerance.
“The persistent bloodshed has become unbearable. If urgent steps are not taken to restore peace, our people may be left with no option but to take their safety into their own hands,” Mark said.
He lamented the government’s inability to protect lives and property, noting that the rising insecurity was pushing communities to the brink.
“This is the sad reality confronting our people. When government fails in its fundamental duty to protect citizens, it betrays the trust placed in it,” he added.
Mark called on the federal government to act swiftly and decisively to end the violence, saying it must prioritize security in Benue and other crisis-ridden areas.
He also urged the Benue State government to intensify local security interventions and reclaim peace in affected communities.
Beyond government action, Mark appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to contain the crisis.
“This is not the time for silence or indifference. Communities must stay united and support all legitimate efforts aimed at ending these attacks,” he emphasized.
While expressing sympathy to the victims and their families, the former Senate president encouraged the people of Benue to remain calm, law-abiding, and resilient despite their pain.
“Our people have endured so much. Even in grief, we must resist the temptation to take the law into our own hands. Let us show unity, courage, and hope in the face of adversity,” he said.
