China has voiced strong opposition to foreign interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs, declaring full support for President Bola Tinubu’s government in the wake of a United States threat of military action.

Beijing, in a statement on Tuesday, called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and its right to pursue an independent path of development.

According to a statement published on the website of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks during a press briefing in Beijing.

“As Nigeria’s strategic partner, China opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as a pretext to meddle in another country’s internal affairs or impose sanctions and military threats,” Mao said.

Her comments came after US President Donald Trump warned of possible military intervention in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians.

Trump had stated that Washington would not hesitate to deploy forces if the “genocide against Christians” was not stopped, a threat that has sparked diplomatic reactions across Africa.

China’s stance reflects its deepening strategic and economic ties with Nigeria, as well as its broader opposition to what it considers Western interference in African governance.

Observers note that Beijing’s backing could further strengthen Nigeria’s position on the global stage, as both countries continue to expand cooperation in infrastructure, trade, and security.
