Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), is facing expulsion from the party following accusations of anti-party activities by a factional leadership.
Abayomi Arabambi, who identifies as the party’s national publicity secretary under a disputed faction, made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday. He said a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting is being convened soon to formally expel Obi.
Arabambi accused the former Anambra State governor of openly supporting the coalition-driven African Democratic Congress (ADC), despite still claiming membership of the Labour Party.
“He was already on suspension before he went ahead to commit further anti-party offences,” Arabambi said. “You cannot be part of a political party and then go ahead to promote another. The constitution does not permit dual political allegiance.”
He alleged that Obi’s actions have deepened the internal turmoil within the party and argued that the former governor lacks the temperament and loyalty to lead any political platform.
In response, Obi has denied being a member of the ADC, clarifying in a recent interview that his involvement with the coalition is driven by a desire to support a broader political movement, not a defection. He also reiterated that he remains a bona fide member of the Labour Party.
Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential election, has hinted at a fresh bid for the presidency in 2027, stating he is fully qualified and prepared to lead Nigeria.
