Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has paid tribute to members of the Nigerian Armed Forces who lost their lives in service to the nation, describing them as heroes whose memories live on in the hearts and minds of the people they protected.
Obi made the remarks in a statement on Thursday to mark the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, which honours soldiers who paid the supreme price in defence of Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty.
He described the day as a moment of solemn reflection and a reminder of the sacrifices made by troops who stood guard in difficult conditions to ensure the safety of citizens.
According to Obi, the most meaningful way to honour fallen soldiers is for Nigerians to build a peaceful and progressive society anchored on responsible leadership.
“The most fitting honour we can give our heroes is to live lives that promote peace and progress and to provide leadership that gives hope to the hopeless,” he said.
The former governor also expressed sympathy for the families of the fallen, noting that Remembrance Day often brings back painful memories of loss.
“For their families, this day is not just symbolic; it is a reminder of an empty chair and a voice that is no longer heard,” Obi said, assuring them that the sacrifices of their loved ones would never be forgotten.
He concluded by praying for the repose of the souls of fallen soldiers, urging Nigerians to remain grateful for their courage and selfless service.
