The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally unveiled former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 presidential election.
The party said the decision followed a broad-based consultation process involving party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and stakeholders from across the country's geopolitical zones.
Announcing the development in a statement, the ADC's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a combination of experience, competence and national appeal capable of offering Nigeria a fresh direction.
According to the party, Amaechi's selection came after his strong showing in the ADC presidential primary, where he emerged runner-up and secured substantial support from party members nationwide.
The ADC said the choice of Amaechi was informed by his extensive record in public service and his ability to contribute meaningfully to a future administration.
The party highlighted Amaechi's political career, which spans more than two decades and includes service as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation.
It noted that his experience in both legislative and executive positions distinguishes him as one of the country's most accomplished political leaders.
"Rt. Hon. Amaechi brings to this ticket one of the most comprehensive public service records in contemporary Nigerian politics," the statement said.
The ADC further pointed to his role in implementing transportation reforms and overseeing major rail infrastructure projects during his tenure as transportation minister, describing his contributions as evidence of administrative capacity and leadership.
The party said the Atiku-Amaechi partnership represents a strategic effort to assemble a leadership team with the experience required to tackle Nigeria's pressing challenges, including insecurity, economic instability and governance deficits.
According to the statement, the combination of Atiku's experience in national politics and Amaechi's grassroots influence across the South-South and Southern Nigeria provides the party with a strong platform for national mobilisation ahead of the 2027 polls.
The ADC also argued that the ticket reflects the diversity of Nigeria and is positioned to attract support across regional, ethnic and political lines.
It described both men as seasoned administrators with proven records in public office and a shared commitment to national development.
The party maintained that the alliance goes beyond electoral calculations, presenting it as a partnership designed to restore public confidence in government and drive economic growth, job creation and national unity.
"Their combined experience in governance, economic management, public administration, party organisation and nation-building offers Nigerians a credible alternative capable of restoring confidence in government and accelerating national development," the statement added.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, the ADC said it remains committed to building a broad coalition capable of challenging the ruling establishment and delivering what it called a new era of prosperity and inclusive development.
The party called on its members, coalition partners, civil society organisations and Nigerians across the country to support the ticket and participate in its campaign to win power at the federal level.
With the unveiling of Amaechi as vice-presidential candidate, the ADC becomes one of the first major opposition platforms to fully define its presidential ticket, setting the stage for intensified political activities ahead of the next general election.
