Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has once again dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking his third exit from the party he co-founded in 1998 and on whose platform he contested the presidency in 2019 and 2023.

Atiku, who also served as Nigeria’s vice president for two terms under the PDP, is currently spearheading an opposition coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Reacting to his latest departure, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde said Atiku’s exit was not a loss to the party. The second-term PDP governor argued that it was better for anyone stalling the party’s progress to step aside.

“If anyone is holding the PDP down, it’s better they leave,” Makinde said. “We won’t miss Atiku.”

Also reacting, former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George, expressed regret over Atiku’s decision but acknowledged it was driven by his personal political ambition.

“It’s unfortunate he left,” George said. “But it’s clear he did so to pursue his 2027 ambition.”

Atiku’s resignation adds to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the PDP, which has been struggling with internal crises and high-profile defections since its loss of power at the federal level in 2015.
