Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) has given the Clerk of the National Assembly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, a four-day ultimatum to facilitate her reinstatement in the Senate or face contempt proceedings.
Through her lawyer, Michael Jonathan Numa (SAN), Akpoti-Uduaghan rejected the Clerk’s September 4 letter maintaining that her suspension remained in force pending a Court of Appeal ruling. She warned that unless she is allowed to resume by Monday, September 15, 2025, she would commence legal action against him in both his personal and official capacities.
Her prolonged suspension has drawn criticism from civil society. Pan-Yoruba group Afenifere described it as a “dangerous political precedent,” while women’s coalition Womanifesto called it unconstitutional and a blow to female political participation.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) also condemned the Senate’s decision, with President Joe Ajaero warning that the labour movement would mobilise against what it termed an “assault on democracy” that deprives Kogi Central constituents of representation.
The ultimatum sets up a showdown between Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate leadership as the September 15 deadline approaches.
