Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Tuesday, met with leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Katsina State, as part of ongoing efforts to forge new political alliances ahead of the 2027 general election.
The closed-door meeting, held at a private venue in Katsina, included prominent political figures such as former Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mustapha Inuwa, and top SDP officials. While specific details of the discussions were not disclosed, sources close to the meeting suggest that it focused on building a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027.
The development follows the recent declaration by PDP governors that the party will not engage in any formal coalitions. El-Rufai’s meeting with Katsina opposition figures comes just one day after he paid a condolence visit to Governor Dikko Radda over the death of his mother, Hajia Safara’u Umaru Barebari. He was accompanied by former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal.
El-Rufai formally resigned from the APC on March 10, 2025. In a public statement shared on his X handle, he cited a growing divergence between his principles and the current direction of the party.
“As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress, I have fond memories of working with other compatriots to negotiate the merger... But recent developments have shown that those currently in charge of the party are not committed to its founding ideals,” he stated.
El-Rufai has since emerged as a vocal critic of the APC, signaling a renewed political ambition under a different platform as the 2027 elections approach.
