The National Assembly has formally transmitted the much-anticipated tax reform bills to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his assent.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), confirmed the development during a press conference held on Tuesday in Abuja.

The bills, which were initially submitted to the legislature by President Tinubu last year as part of his administration’s broader economic reforms, had sparked intense debate among lawmakers. Despite the controversy, both the Senate and the House of Representatives eventually passed the bills, and a harmonised version was adopted on May 25, 2025.

Speaking on the delay in transmission, Senator Adaramodu explained that tax legislation demands meticulous review to ensure compliance with existing laws.

“Yes, the bill has now been transmitted. It is out of our hands and on its way to the executive,” he stated.

“Tax bills like these require careful scrutiny. The legal departments in both chambers must ensure they align with current laws before we can forward them to the Presidency.”

He added that the process goes beyond simple passage, noting that after harmonisation, the Clerk of the National Assembly must prepare the final draft, which is then signed by the Senate President and the Speaker of the House before being officially sent to the President.

President Tinubu is expected to sign the tax reform bills into law as part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to revamp Nigeria’s tax system and boost revenue generation.
