Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has alleged that the current administration may resort to using the judiciary to stall the growing momentum of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Abuja during a visit by the party’s National Legal Support Group, Mark expressed concern that the ruling establishment might exploit legal processes to destabilise the ADC, which he described as a rising political force.
"The ADC is gaining traction nationwide. We are aware of possible moves to weaponise the courts in an attempt to derail our progress," Mark said.
The delegation, led by Abdullahi Abdurrahman, briefed the party leadership on its readiness to defend the party’s interests across all jurisdictions. Abdurrahman revealed that over 310 lawyers have volunteered to represent the ADC in ongoing and anticipated legal matters across Nigeria.
He said the legal team is fully structured with representation in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and is prepared to counter any legal threat to the party’s operations.
Among the key figures on the legal team are ADC’s Legal Adviser Barrister Peter Oyewole, former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General Abubakar Malami (SAN), and renowned legal scholar and former Edo State Governor Professor Oserheimen Osunbor.
Abdurrahman praised Senator Mark for his leadership and urged him to continue guiding the party with integrity and experience. He also called on the Legal Adviser to ensure that the legal team receives all necessary documentation and briefings for effective representation.
Responding, Oyewole assured the team that the legal foundations of the party—particularly those relating to its recent coalition and structural changes—were solid and in full compliance with electoral regulations.
“There is no legal basis for concern. Every process followed in the reconstitution of the party adheres strictly to the law,” Oyewole said.
However, Senator Mark insisted that the party must remain on high alert.
“We should not underestimate the desperation of those who fear genuine competition,” he cautioned. “The ADC is offering Nigerians a credible and patriotic alternative. We will not allow distractions or intimidation to derail this mission.”
He lauded the legal support group for their commitment and readiness, noting that their efforts are central to protecting the party’s mandate as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
With a fast-growing base of supporters and a robust legal strategy, the ADC says it is ready to contest for power and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic future.
