ADC to APC: Spare Nigerians the hypocrisy over Buhari’s death

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has lambasted the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the federal government for what it described as a hypocritical show of grief following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement signed by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC accused the ruling party of shedding crocodile tears, noting that the same APC had consistently blamed Buhari for the country’s economic and security challenges since he left office.

“For a party that has spent the last two years scapegoating Buhari for every misstep and failure, this sudden display of emotion is nothing short of political theatre,” the statement read. “They dismantled his legacy, discredited his achievements, and now want to be seen as chief mourners.”

The ADC said it would observe a three-day mourning period in honour of the late president across its state chapters and national secretariat.

While acknowledging Buhari’s personal discipline and the loyalty he commanded among the masses, especially the underprivileged, the party stressed that his legacy should be treated with sincerity, not political opportunism.

“Regardless of one’s views on his policies, Buhari’s austere lifestyle and commitment to public service won him admiration from many ordinary Nigerians,” the ADC noted.

It urged Nigerians and political leaders to reflect on the values the former president represented and resist the temptation to turn his passing into a partisan spectacle.

“Let us mourn with dignity and use this moment to recommit ourselves to integrity, selflessness, and the public good — values Buhari himself professed,” the party added.
